Photography Apps For Your Phone

I thought I would take a few minutes and go over each of the photography apps that I have on my phone and explain how I use each of them.  I am currently using an Android powered phone, so the apps I will talk about are all available on the Google Play Store.

Apps That Help With Photography In The Field

The first is an app called PhoforPho.  It is a very useful app for determining a lot of things photographically.  It has an exposure calculator, it can calculate hyperfocal distance and depth of field, has a timer as well as a few other features that are sometimes handy.  I use the timer feature of this when I am doing super long exposures with a 10 stop ND filter.  I also use the exposure calculator to determine how long my exposure should be with various ND filters, including the big 'ol 10 stopper.

Another app I use from time to time is called CanonLenses.  This app does pretty much what you would think.  It list all of the different Canon EF and EF-S lenses made as well as EOS bodies.  I usually use this when someone at a workshop or class asks about a particular Canon product that I may need to verify or look more information up about.

Here's another app that I use sometimes for calculating exposure when using ND filters.  The Exposure Calculator app is strictly an exposure calculating app.  I sometimes prefer this one if I only need to calculate exposure.  If I need to do anything else, I usually revert back to PhoforPho.

Another exposure calculator?  Yup, I don't know why I have so many, I guess I collect them.  In my opinon, this is by far the easiest one to use.  You simply set your current shutter speed and aperture then plug in how many stops your ND filter is and...viola!  It tells you what your shutter speed should be with the ND filter added.  Quick and easy.  This app is NDCalc.

Apps For Editing

Adobe Photoshop Express.  This app simply allows me to edit photos I've taken with my camera phone.  I can crop, adjust contrast, exposure, white balance, etc.  Handy to have in your bag.  The app says it requires an SD card, so make sure you have one in your tablet or phone.

snapseed.jpg

Snapseed has become the popular favorite in editing apps for mobile photography.  It has an auto-tune button, which seems to work well in a lot of cases.  It also allows you to adjust several aspects of your image, but the interface is incredible and this is probably the only editing app you would need.

Apps For Determining Shooting Time

Sundroid does a lot.  It determines sunrise times, sunset times, moonrise times, moonset times, length of day and moon phases.  It will even attempt to determine golden hours.  A great sunrise/sunset app to have!

The Pro verison is $2.99

Apps For Learning

The Tamron Android app is a great tool to download.  The app allows you to view Tamron's products, check on local Tamron events in your area, has how-to videso you can watch, you can check on current Tamron rebate offers, register a product...there's just too much to list.  Go download it...you can't beat it for the price, $0.

So these are a few of that apps that I use on a regular basis.  Hopefully they can help you out, too.  If you have some useful apps that you like, I'd love to hear about those, also.
